Singer will sing the James Bond 'Spectre' theme song

The track is called 'Writing's on the wall' and will be released on September 25. It was recorded in January.

Sam Smith

Sam Smith has announced that he will sing the theme song for the upcoming James Bond film, Spectre.

Smith said of the news: "This is one of the highlights of my career. I am so excited to be a part of this iconic British legacy and join an incredible line-up of some of my biggest musical inspirations."

The announcement was made on Radio 1 this morning. Smith told presenter Nick Grimshaw: "I'm so relieved to actually talk about this, this has been top secret mission of my own."

Smith had previously – and repeatedly – denied that he will be involved with the 24th Bond film, which is out on October 26. Just last week the singer told BBC Radio 2's Jo Whiley that he was "definitely not" working on the project.

"That's not me. That's definitely not me," he said. "I've still got loads to do, I've got an Australia tour, but I kind of finish in December which is great, it gives me a chance to be in London, be in my home and go out with my friends."
