Masked gunmen shot dead 12 people at the Paris office of Charles Hebdo on Wednesday, January 7, and allegedly shouted while fleeing “The Prophet has been avenged.”

The satirical magazine is known for its unflattering caricatures of Prophet Mohammed one of which led to its offices being firebombed in 2011.

Charlie Hebdo became notorious in 2006 after portraying a sobbing Mohammed, with the headline “Mahomet débordé par les intégristes” ("Muhammad overwhelmed by fundamentalists.)
