Reports have revealed that the Airtel Kenya head of mobile money transfer services, Topyster Muga, has been crowned IT woman of the year at the first annual tech women’s conference in sub-Saharan Africa.

The award is organized by a regional ICT firm headquartered in Kenya, Techno Brain, and is aimed at recognizing individuals who have led innovative new software or generally available IT services which have the biggest impact on business technology and IT as a whole.

Muga was awarded for her contributions in the creation of the Airtel Money Visa Card, a virtual debit platform mirroring the telecom giant’s mobile money account.

She was also a part of the committee that led the formation of the Mobile Money Association of Kenya which won her the Nelson Mandela scholarship award culminating in her taking an MBA course at the INSEAD Business School in France.

Adil El Youssefi, Airtel Kenya CEO, said Muga’s recognition serves as motivation to female employees in every sector who need to believe in their potential to succeed in any field they wish to pursue.

The debit card allows users of the Airtel money service to withdraw money from their Airtel Money accounts any Vis and Kenswitch ATM worldwide, as well as shop and pay for goods and services using the Airtel Money service at any Visa-accepted merchants worldwide.
