International news agency launches 'Netflix for news' app

Reuters has launched a new app which they claimed could be the 'Netflix for news'. The new app is available exclusively on App Store in US and UK.

International news agency, Reuters, has launched an app which they say could be the “Netflix for news”.

The Reuters TV app for iPhone offers “curated but personalised news coverage” via short video reports.

Two services are offered by Reuters TV app;  “Reuters Now”, a customisable and downloadable news programme lasting between five and 30 minutes, and live feeds of global events.

According to Reuters the app is aimed at “a growing segment of informed, mobile, and globally engaged consumers in their 30s and 40s who value authentic video storytelling and are too busy to watch traditional TV news.”

They will be hoping that the new app which is available exclusively on App Store in US and UK, will be able to compete with apps from other international news agency like BBC, Sky News, CNN, Bloomberg TV, CNBC and Fox Business.

“The way we consume TV and hear about news has changed; Reuters TV is news for the Netflix age: it’s individually relevant, on-demand, and up-to date. It’s ideal for viewing during your daily commute,” Isaac Showman, managing director of Reuters TV said.

The Reuters TV app will also contain limited advertising.

The app will draw Reuters’ over 2500 journalist in more than 160 countries and content will be produced in multiple versions and prepared by editorial teams in London, Hong Kong, New York and Washington DC.

“This is a radically new way of presenting news straight to consumers. Reuters TV will be fast when it needs to be fast, deep when viewers want depth, but most importantly, it will be news that’s authentic, coming straight from the source and journalists on the ground” the executive editor of Reuters TV, Dan Colarusso said.

At launch, users can access a free 30-day preview of the service, with ongoing access charged at $1.99 or £1.49 a month via in-app subscription.
