The Federal Government (FG) urged the Nigerians to be always alert in the crowded public places as they are the main targets of terrorists.

This advice came from the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Monday saying that the people should be vigilant at places like Churches, mosques, hotels, markets and so on as they are the main target places of terrorist attacks. He also said that the military is vigorously employed for this purpose.

Lai Mohammed announced a plan by the ministry to launch a national campaign against insurgency in the North-East regions. He stated that this campaign will be advocating and sensitizing Nigerians on the need to wage war against the insurgents.

The ministry would roll out national jingles to educate Nigerians on the need to be vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the security agencies. He also noted that till date no country had succeeded in fighting insurgency without the support of civilians.

“We will let Nigerians know that the fight against insurgency is a national issue and not to see it as ethnic or religious issue,’’ he said.

He appreciated the efforts of the military for keeping Nigeria one, and taking back Bama town and other communities in the North-East from the insurgents. Mohammed said the Federal Government would ensure that no Nigerian territory remained in the hands of insurgents before the end of the year.

According to Muhammed, as the insurgents failed to make further attack on villages, there is a fair chance that they could go under to attack soft targets such as hotels, markets, mosques and churches.

“I urge Nigerians to be vigilant in these public places and ensure that they know their neighbour’s means of livelihood with a view to complementing the military’s efforts against the insurgents” he said.

The minister also called for a synergy between military and media in the war against insurgency as security is everybody’s business.

The governor observed that the poverty and unemployment are the main reasons of insurgency and the Federal Government will take essential steps to alleviate them.
