Humanitarian body trains 9, 805 health workers in 6 states in 2016

The training is targeted at building the capacity of health workers in meeting the mandate of UNICEF.

Dr Halima Abdu, Health Specialist in the UNICEF Bauchi Field Office, made this known in Jos at the ongoing 2016 review meeting of the fund’s activities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that UNICEF Bauchi Field Office controls Bauchi, Plateau, Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba and Jigawa.

According to Abdu, the training is targeted at building the capacity of health workers in meeting the mandate of UNICEF in curbing malnutrition, high maternal mortality and malaria amongst women and children.

She also explained that with the large number of health workers trained in different aspects of health sector, the field office had exceeded its targets pegged at 7,215.

”We have trained 5,100 health workers in Adamawa, 1,006 in Plateau, 2,188 in Jigawa, 1,146 in Taraba and 263 in Bauchi States.

”We actual targeted to train 7,215 health workers in 2016, but we were able to exceed the target with over 2,000.

”These health workers were trained in areas like Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM), Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), and host of others,” she said.

Abdu said that the health sector would intensify effort to ensure that more workers were trained in 2017.

“This is to give children in the six states in particular, and Nigeria in general, a better and healthy future."

She then called on the state governments in the six states to cooperate and render more support to UNICEF in 2017 for the sake of children.
