Hyland and Hudgens have known each other for nearly a decade, spanning both of Hyland's kidney transplants. Hyland was born with a rare condition called kidney dysplasia, in which the kidneys grow abnormally in the womb, according to the
National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK). Because of the condition, Hyland has undergone over a dozen surgeries and two kidney transplants. She's also been an outspoken advocate for other young people dealing with the condition.
Im so proud of her for being brave to share her story with the world, because it was a very emotional and taxing thing on her, Hudgens told People . Shes just one of the strongest women I know.
After her body rejected her first kidney transplant, from her father, Hyland's 23-year-old brother Ian was found to be a match, so she received his kidney in 2017. She showed off her scar last week with a shout to Ellen Degeneres, whose high-waisted undies covered the area where Hyland's transplant left a bump.
