Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo has given an insight into his target for the upcoming 2022/23 Premier League season with Southampton FC.

Aribo recently completed a £6m move from Scottish Premiership side Rangers to the Ralph Hassenhuttl-led side this summer after impressing in Scotland.

The Nigerian international is gearing up for the start of the season, having featured in a couple of pre-season matches for the Saints.

I did not intend my Villarreal wonder goal - Aribo

In his last preseason game against Spanish La Liga side Villarreal, Aribo scored a wonderful goal, slaloming past a host of Villarreal defenders before putting the ball past the goalkeeper.

According to Daily Echo, the 26-year-old revealed that he did not set out to score the goal when he picked up the ball from midfield.

Aribo stated that he thought of passing it to Adam Armstrong but when the Villarreal defenders closed out the space, he decided to go for goal himself.

The Super Eagles star said: "I went to pass it for Arma (Adam Armstrong) but the defender kind of read it so I said okay, I need to go for it now. Luckily I was able to get through and finish it. It’s a massive feeling."

Aribo targets more goals at Southampton

Following opening his goal account for Southampton, Aribo stated that his aim for the season is to get between the goals more often and create more moments such as the one he did.

"I want to get into the rhythm of finding the back of the net. It’s really important for me to do that. Hopefully I can keep that going into the season to come now," Aribo said.

Joe Aribo is adept at finding the net and played as a striker for Rangers in the closing stages of the 2021/22 season, famously scoring Rangers' only goal in the 2022 UEFA Europa League final.

The Super Eagles star bagged a total of 26 goals and provided 25 assists during his time at Rangers.
