A shopping centre has been fined £75,000 (23 million Naira) after a man got his foot trapped in an escalator, which chopped off his big toe. Metro UK reported.

Michael Reddington, 27, was at the West End Arcade in Nottingham to pick up a mobile phone when he unknowingly stepped into a missing part of the escalator steps.

When he stepped on the escalator, His foot was tragically crushed between the step. The machine crushed his big toe and fracturing his second and third toes and grazing his forth.

Michael, from St Ann’s, Nottingham, had to learn to walk again after the incident and still experiences bouts of pain almost four years later.

He was also forced to give up his job and now works as an electrician.

Speaking after the incident he said: ‘That day in March 2012 will be with me forever. It was like something out of a horror film.’

‘It has taken a long time for me to come to terms with what happened and I still have flashbacks to that day.’

Hodgson Elkington LLP, the shopping centre’s managing agents, were fined £75,000 (23 million Naira) today after pleading guilty to health and safety breaches at Nottingham Crown Court.

The company admitted to charges of exposing people to risk by failing to maintain the escalator in the arcade properly.
