That was it right there. Just when I thought I had dealt with all I had to do today, the thought of attending another family meeting just weighed me down. It was Sunday evening and I felt like it was Wednesday evening. I had yet to prepare for the week, I had to read some text in readiness for tomorrow's meeting and I still had to stop at the market to pick up groceries for the house. The project at the office was weighing me down because I had no ideas and the children's PTA meeting in which parents attendance was mandatory is slated for tomorrow, the same time as my meeting. I sat down, my shoulders drooping. I felt like just shutting down but that was as unrealistic as I could be. There was work to be done and I had to do it. I gritted my teeth, forced my self to stand up and plastered a fake smile on my face as I walked in for the 'family meeting'.
Have you ever felt like this? Like the whole weight of the world is on your shoulders and that there is really nothing you can do about it? We understand that the daily demands of living from work to family to the need for personal growth can be overwhelming sometimes. So how do you deal with it without worry of feeling inadequate about yourself? Here are a few fail safe tips to help you deal with this feeling.
1. Do Nothing: Yes, that’s right. Do nothing. At the time that you are feeling overwhelmed, chances are that you are not thinking clearly and that you cannot make a proper decision. So take a step back, take a deep breath and relax. Move away from whatever is causing you anxiety and do something that would make you feel relax and refreshed.
2. Live in the moment: Chances are that you are trying to do several things at the same time and there is only so much that you can do at the same time. You then begin to worry yourself about things that you cannot change. Do not exhaust yourself with worry. Take things one at a time and try to organize your thoughts in terms of priority.
3. Be Realistic: What aggravates one's feeling of being overwhelmed is the mental picture that people have expectations of you. The fear of falling short of expectations can be mind freezing and can inspire a deep sated fear that makes you contemplate the unthinkable. Note however that very few people except close family and friends, pay such painstaking attention to your life. If you are going to do something, do it for yourself and not because of anyone's perceived expectations of you.
4. Take Out the Trash: Nothing contributes to the feeling of being overwhelmed like clutter. Mentally you are overwhelmed and when your environment is also cluttered, it would be extremely difficult to focus on anything productive. So take out the trash, clear out your room, home, work space and mental garbage. When everywhere is nice and airy, there is a better chance of achieving more.
5. One Step At A Time: When you have taken care of the needful, you might need to put a list together of things that you need to do in order of priority. This would give you more focus and help you be more productive in your day to day activities and ultimately dispel the feeling of being overwhelmed.
There you have it; some tips to help you deal with your day to day challenges and help you become a better more productive individual.
