As gorgeous as those curls on your favorite YouTubers are, there are several things you need to know before making that decision to go for the big chop or transition into natural hair.

1. Maintaining natural hair is a lot of work: having natural hair means you need to constantly detangle and soften it using hair care products. In the beginning stages of growing out your natural hair, it is going to fight back, a lot. You need to be ready for that everyday struggle.

2. There are different types of curls: natural hair for black women comes in different grades. Your curls are different from that of other women, and could also be different from that of your mother! You need to understand what type of curls you have, and learn how to take care of them. Your stylist could help you with this.

3. Your hair texture would most likely change: if you had natural hair when you were younger, it would be normal to assume that your new growth of natural hair would be the same as the old one. That is not true. You might retain that texture or get a whole new one, so get ready for surprises.

4. Be ready to wear a lot of protective styles: especially if you are going for the big chop, you have to invest in wigs. Your hair would rebel most days and the only way to tame it would be to pack it up (if it is long enough) or braid it backwards and cover it with a wig.

5. You would need a stylist’s help to figure out short hairstyles that work for you: there are many awesome ways to style your natural hair, so find one that works for you. If you are transitioning, there are also hairstyles and products that would help blend the new hair texture with that of the old one.
