President tells Senate he can’t sack Babachir Lawal despite fraud allegations

Buhari said that the Senate was not fair to Lawal as he was not allowed to defend himself against the allegations.

President Buhari and Babachir Lawal

The Senate, in December 2016, urged Lawal to resign after he was accused of misappropriating funds meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the North-East.

Buhari however said that the Senate was not fair to Lawal as he was not allowed to defend himself against the allegations.

The president also said that the company alleged to be owned by Lawal was not invited to defend itself on the allegations.

Buhari made the submissions via a letter sent to the Senate and read by Senate President, Bukola Saraki on Tuesday, January 24.

Kaduna State Senator, Shehu Sani, who chaired the committee which probed Lawal, however said that Buhari’s letter was full of lies.

Meanwhile, Buhari has also insisted on the nomination of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) despite corruption charges against him.

Buhari informed the Senate of his decision via a letter which was also read by Saraki on Tuesday.
