Zvezda Faces a True Test of Maturity: Navarro's Malaga Recipe Needs to Scale Up in Belgrade

The moment has finally arrived. A new EuroLeague season is kicking off, and Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet is not hiding its ambitions: a spot in the EuroLeague playoffs. Simply put, the Red-Whites can no longer afford to miss this step towards the postseason, as public patience has worn thin. This team promises a lot, perhaps the best on paper in the modern era, but paper means nothing if it doesn't translate into strong on-court performance.

Ibon Navarro arrived to inject new energy into Crvena Zvezda, replacing Saša Obradović. His philosophy centers on fast-paced basketball, extensive player rotation, and a system where everyone contributes equally. This modern, Spanish-influenced approach to the game is a departure from what Serbian basketball fans are accustomed to. Both the players and the Red Star faithful will need to adapt to this new reality. Navarro's system proved highly successful at Unicaja, where he laid the groundwork for the club's most prosperous period, securing cups and Champions League titles. The only missing piece was an Endesa League championship to cap it all off.

Now, he's taken a step up. Zvezda marks his first EuroLeague coaching role, offering him the chance to work with experienced players who are hungry for trophies. Currently, they are still in the adaptation phase, and naturally, no one is operating at 100%. However, feelings are mixed so far. At times, Zvezda's offense has been impressive, but defensive issues are evident. The team will need to tighten up their defense, as it's a recurring theme: last year, when the Red-Whites played strong defense, they were dominant.

Summer Transfers – A Blend of Experience and Youth

Zvezda has significantly strengthened its roster for the upcoming season. The Red-Whites have brought in proven EuroLeague players such as Chris Jones, David Kramer, Nick Weiler-Babb, and Jonathan Motley. Additionally, local talents like Andrej Bjelić and Vojin Medarević have joined. We also shouldn't forget Nikola Đurišić, who arrived late last season and is set to make his EuroLeague debut once he returns from injury. The only player who truly represents an experiment is Patrick Baldwin, who has much to prove.

Pre-season Showed Promise and Concerns

Drawing major conclusions from a few pre-season games is difficult. No team reveals all its cards immediately, but at certain moments, Zvezda's play looked good. At the pre-season tournament in Crete, they played an excellent game against Milan, but Olympiacos in the next match demonstrated why they are European champions.

In Nicosia, there was an opportunity for revenge against the Red-Whites from Piraeus, but Georgios Bartzokas's team ultimately triumphed in the final minute. Against Aris, much of that momentum seemed to dissipate, as the Thessaloniki team played a superb game and secured a victory. Subsequently, in the final dress rehearsal in "Pionir," the Red-Whites defeated Aris, healing some wounds.

The impression is that offense was the strongest aspect of their play, but more attention needs to be paid to turnovers and defense. Of course, everything should be taken with a degree of caution. There were good and bad moments, but all things considered, the team looks quite solid.

The X-Factor

At this moment, David Kramer has arguably been the most impressive player. He arrived under the radar from Real Madrid. However, his defensive commitment and valuable offensive contributions have quickly won over the fans. It also seems the charismatic German will forge a strong connection with Belgrade. He mentioned he's started learning Serbian, which has only further endeared him to the supporters.

Ultimately, the Red-Whites have a good team, a capable coach who needs to prove himself, and fans who must believe in both the team and the coach. Without mutual trust, there will be no results, and Zvezda certainly has the potential for them.
