"You're lucky to find me in such a calm state!" Giannakopoulos roars at police and EuroLeague: If I had done this, you'd punish me in my next life!
The outspoken owner of Panathinaikos, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, unleashed a barrage of Instagram stories, fiercely criticizing both the Greek police and EuroLeague officials. Giannakopoulos expressed his outrage over the chaotic organization of the event, highlighting how hundreds of fans without tickets stormed the arena, while those who had paid dearly for their seats (including a vocal contingent from Turkish club Fenerbahçe) faced harassment at the entrances.
He began by admonishing the police and state authorities, accusing them of applying double standards.
"All my life, I've respected authorities and stood by the police, but I will never stay silent. You placed us under strict security measures, and for good reason. As a club, we've invested millions of euros in identity verification systems, cameras, crowd control, and sports laws that you only enforce when it suits you! Fifteen days ago, under the pretext that some additional Panathinaikos fans were trying to enter, you tear-gassed people. Yet, on the day of the semi-finals, despite knowing what was happening and that checks weren't being carried out due to the massive crowds, you allowed uncontrolled entry, and what happened, happened. Regardless of calling yourselves police and an authority, I expect and demand an immediate apology to all Panathinaikos fans and true basketball enthusiasts who came to watch the tournament."
Following his critique of the police, Giannakopoulos turned his attention to the EuroLeague's governing body. He emphasized that if Panathinaikos had been the organizer, the penalties would have been draconian, publicly calling out the competition's leadership for accountability.
"I know you have translators at the EuroLeague, so listen carefully. If all of this had happened at a Panathinaikos game, you would have fined us millions, suspended our arena, and personally banned me from entering any arena, even in my next life! Now, with all this happening under your direct responsibility, because we handed you a clean and ready arena, what are you going to do? Is Giannakopoulos to blame again? Are you going to punish me again? Come on, leave me alone. You're lucky to find me in such a calm state."
A fiery and electrifying final awaits us in Athens, scheduled for Sunday at 8 PM, featuring Olympiacos and Real Madrid.
