"Music is too vast for you to just say you want to make rap music alone," rapper says
Ycee recently sat down and got talking to Pulse Nigeria about his new EP, Sony deal, Nigerian acts signing up to foreign labels and more.
The 'Jagaban' artist comments on issues of being labelled strictly as a core rapper in some quarters, saying that sticking to rap only would get boring with time.
“Music is too vast for you to just say you want to make rap music alone, you will get bored trust me”.
He tells Pulse about his varying taste in music, saying he listens to all kinds of music - pop, rock n roll, R&B, Pop, and so on. And since he listens to such, there is no way he won’t enjoy making such kind of music.
On the Sony deal, Ycee explains the edge the music giants have in terms of reach as the reason his team signed up with them for wide distribution of his First Wave EP.
The Tinny rapper also expressed in his opinion that the artist together with his team and the foreign record labels poaching for the artist should come to an understanding of what they both want out of the deal.
He points out the mistakes some of the Nigerian artists alike who sign up deals with the labels make, saying that they feel they can get away with blending and adapting their sound straightaway to please listeners over there, forgetting that the record labels signed them up for their originality in sound.
“The artist feels he has gotten Africa, or Nigeria on lock so all you need to do now is switch your sound to American style, it won’t work, because that’s not what you were signed for, that’s not what caught their attention,” Ycee explains.
He further explains that the artist can switch up but has to ease into it gradually for a better chance to gain traction.
Ycee also is of the opinion that these labels don’t have enough on the ground knowledge yet to influence the creative process of the Nigerian or African artist.
He also talks about artist growth and the need for more music culture festivals such as the Gidi Fest that aims to promote and push African music to the world.
Ycee also explains the idea behind the strategy he took on the "First Wave" EP.
