Xabi Alonso: Manchester United clash is massive, I have sympathy for Carrick
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has labelled tomorrow's clash against Manchester United as crucial, particularly after the Blues suffered a defeat to Tottenham in their last home outing. The Spaniard delivered team news and expressed sympathy for Red Devils boss Michael Carrick, who was widely reported to be facing the sack earlier this week.
"Maxence Lacroix picked up an injury, and I don't expect him to be ready before the international break, so he will be sidelined for a few weeks. Emi Martinez has a chance to return before the break. We have to wait until next week to be sure. Let's see how things develop, but there is a chance.
"We're back in Premier League mode. For me, it remains our main competition this season. It's a massive match for which we haven't had much time to prepare, but it's hugely important. Following our last home game, getting back to winning ways and maintaining that winning feeling is vital.
"I have huge respect for Michael Carrick. I have a lot of sympathy for him in his managerial role. I know him well from our playing days against each other, but beyond that, it's not my place to comment.
"United boast a strong squad with quality players and top coaches, so a tough test awaits us. To get the win, we'll have to be at our absolute best and produce our finest performance," Alonso stated during his press conference today.
