"Nearly every chip you eat in a decent hotel in Africa is imported" - Agnes Kalibata
Insights into agriculture in Africa were shared at the Press Conference, One million tons of cold storage at the World Economic Forum on Africa that begun yesterday, May 11, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda.
Agnes Kalibata, President of Alliance for Green Revolution in Africa which focuses on working with farmers to increase productivity says that disease management, lack of cold storage and access to the right input system are the major problems farmers in Africa are plagued with.
In Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda, 1.7 million farmers produce 6 million tons of potatoes, a number that could be way higher but for the challenges holding back the agricultural industry in Africa.
Agnes said that hotels and other establishments import these potatoes because they go through an industrial process that gets the potato chips to that level where they are nearly done- industrial processes that potato farmers in Africa do not have access to.
She also said that they are very proud to be going into partnership with governments and institutions that see the need to improve the potato and agricultural industry in Africa.
Gerardine Muteshimana, Rwanda's minister of agriculture and animal resources said that agriculture in Rwanda is looking to handle the production issues through a value chain approach, including investment in production and post harvest processes to cut loss and wastage.
