The Senegalese Football Federation has sacked national team coach Pape Thiaw, citing the team's World Cup performance as the reason for a change at the helm. Senegal had high hopes of being a contender at the 2026 World Cup after defeating Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations final in January. However, their tournament campaign proved disappointing, with losses in their first two group stage matches against France and Norway. They then squandered a 2-0 lead five minutes from time against Belgium in the Round of 16, ultimately suffering a 3-2 defeat in extra time.
Thiaw, 45, had previously served a five-match ban in September at the start of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. This suspension was a result of him leading his players off the pitch in protest of a penalty awarded to Morocco in the Rabat final. French daily L'Equipe reports that Patrick Vieira, a World Cup winner with France and a Dakar native, is among the favorites to take over the position. The Senegalese Federation has scheduled an emergency press conference for Monday.
