Singer reveals challenges of Eastern artistes to break into mainstream market
Wizboyy has revealed reasons why certain artistes from Eastern Nigeria have failed to break into the mainstream market.
The veteran singer and performer has churned many hit songs, with ‘Screen saver’, and ‘Infinity’, inclusive in his impressive discography.
He talked to Pulse TV, explaining the challenges involved in making the shift from Eastern Nigeria, to Lagos, which is the country’s entertainment hub.
“It’s quite a tough one, you know the music industry right now. It is demanding and competitive.” Wizboyy said.
“It’s difficult to actually say what and why. It is a known fact that it gets to a point in your career, you need to move to where the market is, which is Lagos.
You do a song, and it’s everywhere, and you’re in Enugu hearing that your song is here, your song is there’. You get to appoint where you know that this is the focal point where you can actually sell and break out to the international community. So I think it is very necessary for any artiste, wherever you are to be able to know when to shift your market…even if you don’t relocate, you need to make contact, form alliances with people who would help you push your music to the next level.”
When asked whyy certain artistes such as Dekumzy, Slow Dog, and TJ have failed to capture the mainstream, he was optimistic, stating that the named artistes aren’t exactly doing bad, pointing to Phyno as an example of an eastern artiste who has made fame.
“I wouldn’t say these names you mentioned, these guys didn’t do it, sometimes you try…but most Eastern artistes are actually doing good. Phyno is doing very good.”
