The season has certainly not started the way Crvena Zvezda fans had hoped. The fixture list appeared favorable with several consecutive home games to open the campaign—Belgrade Arena, on paper at least, should have provided a decisive home-court advantage for the Belgrade club.
Yet, the results tell a completely different story. Zvezda have played two games in Belgrade and lost both, slipping up against sides likely to be direct rivals in the playoff and play-in race.
Just over five percent of the regular season is in the books, with 36 rounds still to play, so all is far from lost. However, an immediate turnaround is required; a single victory would deliver a vital confidence boost to both the squad and the fanbase moving forward.
Time Is Needed, but There Is None to Spare
You don't have to be a basketball expert to see that Crvena Zvezda Meridianbet need time to hit their stride. The reasons are clear: a new head coach with his own tactical philosophy, several new signings, and a collective search for defined roles and chemistry after a disrupted preseason.
As a result, the red-and-whites must adjust on the fly, ironing out mistakes with minimal practice time while searching for a spark to finally get off the mark this season.
Miloš Teodosić urged patience ahead of the opening tip-off, and head coach Ibon Navarro reiterated in his post-game press conference that the team is progressing along an upward trajectory at its own pace, warning that taking shortcuts would be a mistake.
Unfortunately, patience is a luxury in modern sports, and time is in short supply. Sitting at 0-2, Zvezda face immense pressure heading into their third straight home fixture on Thursday against Anadolu Efes, who arrive buoyed by a win over Real Madrid. Round four then presents a daunting trip to Dubai, where very few visiting teams have tasted victory over the past two years.
Consequently, Zvezda need an urgent response. While the call for time is legitimate, playing for this club comes with relentless expectations from supporters who will not tolerate a prolonged losing slump. Navarro's side must hit the reset button immediately and find a way past Efes to douse the flames and buy themselves some much-needed breathing room.
Johnathan Motley – A Final Wake-Up Call
It might seem harsh to issue a wake-up call after just two rounds, but the performances of former Hapoel and Fenerbahce center Johnathan Motley have been alarming in a red-and-white jersey.
Motley endured a disastrous outing against Zalgiris, narrowly missing an all-time EuroLeague low with a PIR of -13—just one shy of the negative record—and he looked scarcely better against the Israeli side.
An early dunk did little to spark Motley's confidence. He fumbled routine passes, was late on defensive rotations, and, most concerning of all, looked completely stripped of self-belief.
Frustrations have already spilled over to sections of the home crowd, who jeered him as he was substituted in the third quarter. While such a reaction may feel premature after just two games, Motley arrived in Belgrade to serve as the starting center for a playoff-caliber team. Two points and four turnovers across 17 minutes on the floor fall well short of expectations—and the troubling reality is that this was actually his better performance of the campaign so far.
