Liam Lawson has recalled a story from the early stages of his Formula 1 career, revealing details of a conversation he had with Helmut Marko in 2023—just before Daniel Ricciardo's crash at Zandvoort, an incident that ultimately changed the course of his career.

Daniel Ricciardo's Formula 1 comeback took a sharp turn during the second practice session for the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. A crash at Turn 3 resulted in a fractured metacarpal in his left hand, forcing him to miss several races. In response, Red Bull gave his seat to young New Zealander Liam Lawson, despite him never having started a Formula 1 race before.

Lawson immediately impressed on his debut at Zandvoort and continued his strong performances in the following races. These results ultimately convinced Dr. Helmut Marko and Red Bull to promote him to the main team alongside Max Verstappen for the 2025 season, although his initial stint with the Milton Keynes-based team lasted only two races.

On the "F1: Off The Grid" podcast, Lawson recalled seeking out Marko during the 2023 Dutch race weekend after spending several days contemplating his future. Having been part of the Red Bull junior program for five years without getting a Formula 1 opportunity, the New Zealander decided to ask Marko directly why he hadn't been given a chance yet. The conversation didn't go as expected, with Lawson admitting that Marko quickly "shut him down," leaving him disappointed.

However, just a short while later, everything changed. Following Daniel Ricciardo's injury, Red Bull began evaluating their options for a replacement rather than immediately choosing Lawson:

"I had three days of basically just reflecting on things, and then I flew to Zandvoort. I decided I was just going to sit down with Helmut and press him to see what he was thinking. I went into his office on Friday morning at the track and said, 'Why don't you just give me a shot? You've invested all this money in me. What's the point? I've been in the programme for five years.' It got to a point where I think he got a bit angry because he basically just shut me down. I left the meeting, called my trainer who was there, and told him, 'This is pretty tough.'"

Ultimately, Marko called him into his office and asked him a single question: was he ready? Lawson replied with a "Yes," and just moments later, he was given the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut.

"It wasn't just a direct decision: 'Liam will be in the car.' It was, 'Who else can we get who potentially has experience, who has driven the car?'. I went to Helmut, walked in, and he looked at me and said, 'Are you ready?'. I replied, 'Yes.' And that was the entire conversation."
