What PAO is Offering Željko Obradović: Ataman's Time is Up, Giannakopoulos Goes All In!

Panathinaikos' EuroLeague failure, missing out on the Final Four played in their own arena, has cast significant doubt on Ergin Ataman's future as the Greens' coach. Željko Obradović is increasingly mentioned as a potential replacement for the Turkish coach, with Greek media reporting a concrete offer from the Athenian club.

Panathinaikos' elimination from the EuroLeague quarterfinals by Valencia, especially after securing two road wins in Spain, has sparked significant fan discontent. This frustration was compounded by their arch-rival Olympiacos celebrating a European title on their home court. Coach Ergin Ataman's position is now precarious, with Greek media increasingly speculating about a potential return for Željko Obradović, who led the Athenians to five EuroLeague titles.

After departing Partizan, Obradović took a break, announcing he would consider his next career move in the summer. A return to PAO is reportedly one of the options, a topic also discussed on the Italian “Backdoor” podcast.

"At this point, it's no longer a secret that Željko Obradović has been contacted to take over Panathinaikos in the club's new era. However, he is still hesitant to accept the job," the Italian sources state.

Nevertheless, Europe's most decorated coach is not yet ready for final negotiations, reportedly dissatisfied with the working conditions. There are alleged disagreements regarding the organization of the sports project and the club's operational structure. Despite being offered complete control over the sports sector, Obradović is still far from making a final decision.

Disagreement with Giannakopoulos a key issue

Sources indicate that Obradović's differing views with the Athenian club's owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, also present a problem.

"His views on many issues clash with the owner's temperament. Although relations are better now than before, Obradović remains hesitant. Giannakopoulos is offering him complete control, including the coaching staff and club communication," the report states.

Furthermore, reports have emerged of dissatisfaction within the locker room. Allegedly, some players believe the team has lost clear structure and on-court leadership.

According to the same sources, Obradović has currently halted all discussions with the club. The reason is that the esteemed coach does not wish to negotiate while Panathinaikos still has a head coach.

"Sources close to the club suggest Ataman's days on the bench are numbered. A final decision is expected after the Greek championship finals against Olympiacos. Obradović has stated that, out of respect for his colleague, he does not want serious negotiations until the club resolves its coaching situation," reports “Backdoor”.

The same article emphasizes that Obradović would only return to Athens under clearly defined conditions. For anything more concrete, however, one will have to wait until the end of the current season.
