The deal, valued at a total of $252 million, will commence next summer.

The 22-year-old Wembanyama had the option to sign a $303 million contract but chose to forgo approximately $10 million annually, allowing the team's management more flexibility to build a more competitive roster. Despite this, his new contract ranks as the third-largest ever signed by a player coming off a rookie deal. Only Detroit Pistons point guard Cade Cunningham and Cleveland Cavaliers center Evan Mobley have secured more lucrative extensions.

Last season, the 7-foot-4 Wembanyama led San Antonio to the NBA Finals and was also honored with the "Defensive Player of the Year" award. In 64 regular-season games, he averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 3.1 blocks per contest.
