Waving Goodbye to Millions in Saudi Arabia, Star Defender Returns to Barcelona

FC Barcelona has brought defender João Cancelo back to the team. The Spanish champions announced on Thursday that the 32-year-old Portuguese international is once again their player, signing a contract at Camp Nou until June 30, 2029.

Cancelo has terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal to return to Barcelona as a free agent, where he spent the latter half of last season on loan. He also featured for the Catalan giants during the 2023/24 campaign, also on loan.

The full-back, with experience in England and Italy, is thus Barcelona's latest summer signing, following Rodri, Anthony Gordon, and Karim Adeyemi. According to AFP, the Spanish champions are also still actively pursuing a striker after the departures of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.

Barcelona attempted to sign Julián Álvarez from Atlético Madrid, but must now look elsewhere, as "Los Rojiblancos" refused to sanction a transfer for the Argentine international.

Hansi Flick's squad will kick off their new La Liga season on Sunday with an away fixture against Elche.
