Vinicius Jr. Breaks Silence: "The feeling of disappointment is immense, I ask for forgiveness"
Five days after Brazil's World Cup round of 16 exit to Norway, Vinicius Jr. broke his silence. He did so with a letter posted on social media, accompanied by a black-and-white photo of him lying on the grass, devastated after the final whistle. The Real Madrid forward, who was a key attacking figure for the "Canarinha" throughout the tournament with three goals and two assists, decided to address the fans after several days of reflection.
In the match against Norway, with the score at 0-0, Brazil was awarded a penalty. However, Vinicius Jr. did not step up to take it. The responsibility was entrusted to Bruno Guimarães, designated as the penalty taker by Ancelotti's coaching staff, who ultimately missed against the Norwegian goalkeeper. After the match, Vinicius Jr. clarified in the mixed zone that he hadn't shied away from responsibility, but simply respected the coaching staff's pre-determined decision.
"Nearly four years later, I'm once again contemplating what to write after a World Cup disappointment. I saw so many people of all ages supporting me and embracing our dream, and it would be unfair to remain silent. But I needed a few days to reflect," Vinicius Jr. wrote.
"Wearing the national team jersey is the greatest pride of my life, and being eliminated in the World Cup round of 16 is a feeling that is very difficult to explain. I know how much I prepared, how focused I was, and how much I wanted this for you and for my family. The feeling of disappointment is immense. We had a strong enough team to go much further, but we couldn't. I ask for forgiveness and I will fight for our dream to return to the top of the world," he added.
