Villarreal has officially announced that, in agreement with Real Betis, players from both teams will take to the field on Monday wearing jerseys in support of the residents of Ceuta. The Spanish enclave in Africa is currently experiencing a severe migration crisis.
In a statement, Villarreal confirmed that ahead of their home match against Betis this evening at 10:00 PM Bulgarian time, a fixture in La Liga's fifth round, both teams' players will don special jerseys in solidarity with Ceuta as they enter the pitch.
The kits will feature the slogan "We are all Caballas" – the popular nickname for the inhabitants of the Spanish enclave. The club clarified that the initiative is "a gesture of solidarity with the autonomous city and all its citizens who have been experiencing a particularly complex situation in recent weeks due to the migration crisis."
"Ceuta is not alone. We are all Caballas," concludes Villarreal's official statement.
This stance from both clubs comes amidst an extremely tense backdrop. The Spanish government has reported that several thousand migrants, who remained in Ceuta after the events of July, have returned to Morocco. As tensions on the ground continue to escalate, both sides are trading blame amid ongoing diplomatic friction.
