Victor Wembanyama Turns Heads with Unconventional Offseason Training, Works Out with Rugby Squad
San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama has once again caught the sports world's attention with an unconventional approach to his offseason training. The French phenom spent several days training with French rugby club Provence Rugby, working on new movement mechanics and building his physical strength.
This is not the first time the young Spurs cornerstone has stepped outside traditional basketball workouts. After spending nearly two weeks training with Shaolin monks at the historic Shaolin Temple in China last summer, he sought out a fresh cross-sport challenge. Joining him during the rugby sessions was his San Antonio teammate, veteran forward Harrison Barnes.
Following a memorable run leading the San Antonio Spurs to the NBA Finals, Wembanyama embarked on a grueling offseason schedule. Beyond the rugby pitch and his international duties representing France in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers, the French sensation secured a record-breaking maximum contract extension and was named the cover star for the upcoming NBA 2K27 video game.
For the second straight summer, the center also dedicated substantial time to individual skill sessions with NBA legend Hakeem Olajuwon, a collaboration expected to give him an even sharper edge on the hardwood. His work with the Hall of Famer already paid dividends during the 2025/2026 campaign, where Wembanyama posted stellar averages of 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.1 blocks, and 3.1 assists per game—firmly establishing himself as a top MVP candidate and becoming the first unanimous Defensive Player of the Year in NBA history.
