Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 world champion, is gearing up for an unusual challenge: facing 100 drivers in a karting race. The event, dubbed "Max vs 100," will take place at Silverstone circuit on Wednesday and will see the Dutch driver start from the very back of the grid.
The Red Bull driver will have just 30 laps to overtake all his opponents and claim the lead. Despite the daunting task, Verstappen remains confident, foregoing additional practice and relying on his extensive experience in the sport, which he's pursued since childhood.
"I drove karts from the age of four until 15, so for me, there's no excuse to say 'I need more practice' or 'I need more time'," the driver stated. "When I get there, it's just about learning the track, getting used to the kart's grip, and that's it. There's not much more I can do. But I'm sure some of them will be very fast too."
To level the playing field, Verstappen's 100 opponents will have a strategic advantage. For the first 15 laps, they can use a shortcut to gain ground whenever the Dutchman approaches. Conversely, Verstappen will only be able to access his own shortcut from the second half of the race.
The race dynamic will be one of elimination: each driver overtaken by Verstappen is removed from the race, progressively thinning out the field. The objective for the 100 competitors, therefore, is to stay ahead of the world champion for as long as possible.
