Four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen smiled as he admitted that he does not read books, after being asked for his thoughts on Christian Horner's autobiography, titled "Drive", which was published earlier this week.
The Dutch driver deflected the question with a dose of irony, making it abundantly clear that he has no intention of revisiting the past or commenting on the former Red Bull team principal's motorsport memoirs.
Naturally, Verstappen features prominently in the book given the pair's immense shared success. Even so, the 29-year-old racer showed no interest in confirming or denying any of the recounted events – including claims that long-standing advisor Helmut Marko was initially against promoting him from Toro Rosso to Red Bull in 2016.
When asked if he or his father – former F1 driver Jos Verstappen – had read the book and what they thought of it, the Dutchman wittily fired back with a question of his own:
"Why specifically me and my dad? Why not my mum or my sister?"
After being reminded that both he and his father are frequently mentioned in the pages, he added:
"Because we worked together for a very long time, right? Honestly, I haven't read the book. I don't really read books in general. Besides, I don't see the point in sitting here and explaining: 'Well, this is true, that's not true, I think this way, I saw things differently.' All of those events are in the past. We shared great moments together and had a very long working relationship. For me, though, what matters most is what is happening here and now."
Verstappen stressed that his focus is purely on the racing ahead, maintaining his winning momentum, and fighting for the title next season as he prepares to chase a third consecutive Grand Prix victory.
"I'm focused on the upcoming weekend and on next year. I feel great in the team," Verstappen concluded. "Over time people change – some come, others go. I don't need to retell everything from my perspective about what exactly happened in the past. I'm only looking to the future and enjoying my racing."
