However, the change from Ronald Koeman to Xavi at the helm of the "Oranje" has cast doubt on the 35-year-old veteran's status. According to "The Athletic," Van Dijk initiated the meeting, which is expected to take place in the coming weeks. The two had a brief encounter during the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid, which Xavi watched live from the stands at Anfield.

Van Dijk himself, who is entering the final year of his contract with the Merseyside club, remains confident in his ability to contribute to the team.

"I feel I can still be useful and important to the team," the defender commented on his international prospects.

He hopes his vision for the future aligns with that of the Spanish specialist. "If we are on the same page regarding this, we have two good years ahead of us until Euro 2028. And if not, then we'll see," Van Dijk added, leaving all possibilities open.
