Valencia Officially Unveils Aguirre, Who Arrives on Short-Term Deal to Salvage Season
Javier Aguirre has officially been appointed as Valencia's new head coach. The 67-year-old Mexican replaces Carlos Corberán, who was sacked 10 days ago following the team's disastrous start to the season, which currently sees them second-to-last in La Liga.
Aguirre, who led Mexico to the World Cup Round of 16, has signed a contract only until the end of the current season, with an option for Valencia to extend it for another year. According to "Marca," this clause will be automatically activated if Aguirre successfully guides the "Bats" to a qualification spot for the Europa League playoffs.
Valencia's new coach is set to arrive in the city this Thursday, accompanied by several of his most trusted associates. His coaching staff will include Toni Amor as assistant and Paul Lorente as fitness coach – specialists with whom the Mexican manager has regularly worked during his recent professional stints, including with the Mexican national team. The plan is for him to meet the players either on Thursday or Friday.
Aguirre will be formally introduced to the media on Monday, September 28th.
Aguirre's appointment is the work of sporting director Braulio Vázquez, who identified him as the primary candidate after Ernesto Valverde opted to take a break. The coach's extensive experience in La Liga proved to be a decisive factor. Throughout his career, he has managed Osasuna, Atlético Madrid, Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganés, and Mallorca.
