While all eyes in Portugal — and across much of the footballing world — were fixed on the senior national team and the drama surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo, the Under-21s took care of business. In Ponta Delgada, Portugal swept past Gibraltar 4-0 to secure qualification for Euro 2027, set to be hosted by Albania and Serbia. It was a celebratory night for a generation continuing to forge its own path.

The gulf in class between the two sides was evident from the opening whistle. Portugal camped inside the opposition half, stacking up chances and pinning Gibraltar into their own penalty box. The only thing missing was the clinical edge that often turns total dominance into a rout.

It took a moment of pure magic to break the deadlock. In the 22nd minute, Rodrigo Mora controlled the ball inside the area and produced a breathtaking bicycle kick. The ball nestled into the back of the net, allowing Portugal to breathe a well-deserved sigh of relief.

The lead could — and should — have been wider. Mezian Soares and Rafael Nel, both making their first Under-21 starts, alongside Gonçalo Oliveira and Mora himself, consistently carved out opportunities, but wayward finishing let Gibraltar off the hook. That was until stoppage time at the end of the first half, when the second goal finally arrived.

Following a spell of persistent pressure and a series of deflections in the box, the ball fell to Rodrigo Rêgo, who made no mistake to score his first goal at this level. Two goals, both courtesy of players named Rodrigo, saw Portugal head into the break with a comfortable cushion, albeit one that flattered the visitors given the balance of play.

The second half followed an identical script: Portugal dictating the tempo, Gibraltar digging in, and the hosts continuing to squander scoring opportunities.

Supporters had to wait until the 90th minute to celebrate once again. Mateus Fernandes whipped a cross into the box and Gonçalo Oliveira arrived right on cue to head home. Just two minutes later, Afonso Moreira delivered another dangerous ball, which Peacock inadvertently deflected into his own net. In the blink of an eye, 2-0 had turned into 4-0.

In the end, occasional wastefulness in front of goal was the only minor blemish on an otherwise flawless evening. Portugal were dominant, convincing, and above all, fulfilled their objective: Euro 2027 qualification is secured.

This will mark Portugal's 13th appearance at the Under-21 European Championship finals. It remains a tournament Portugal have never won — one of the few major international trophies that still eludes them. While attention was focused elsewhere, the next generation wrote another chapter of their own story.
