Unexpected Departure After Successful Season: Strasbourg Appoints Former Goalkeeper Coach as New Manager
Oliveira joins Strasbourg from Portuguese side Famalicão, where he had his first stint as a head coach. “It is an honor for me to be in Strasbourg and become part of such a great project. I want to bring emotion, create unforgettable moments, and give my best to help the club develop further,” Oliveira stated in the club’s announcement.
For most of his coaching career, he specialized in goalkeeper training. He worked with the Portuguese national team, as well as English clubs Everton and Fulham, alongside manager Marco Silva. In December 2024, he took over Famalicão, leading them to a fifth-place finish in the top Portuguese league, the club's best placement since returning to the elite division.
O'Neil managed Strasbourg from January of this year. He guided the team to the Conference League semi-finals and an eighth-place finish in Ligue 1. Strasbourg will kick off the new French top-flight season away at Olympique Marseille in the second half of August, as reported by AFP.
