Unai Simón: A Clean Sheet is a Team Effort, Not Just Mine

Spain's goalkeeper, Unai Simón, remained humble after a historic 3-0 victory against Austria, which secured their spot in the Round of 16. He surpassed Walter Zenga's record, becoming the goalkeeper with the most minutes without conceding a goal at a World Cup. Instead of focusing on his personal achievement, Simón was quick to praise his teammates for their collective defensive effort.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll always say it – keeping a clean sheet is a team effort, involving all 11 players on the pitch, and even all 26 players here. You have to consider the pressing from Oyarzabal, Lamine, Baena, Dani Olmo... that’s key for the team. We all work and fight together,” Simón stated regarding his latest shutout.

The shot-stopper also analyzed the match's progression, acknowledging initial difficulties against Austria's high press.

“For the first 20 minutes, right up until halftime, we lacked maturity and fluidity in our play. The truth is, Austria pressed us well, but we gradually broke them down. Finding Lamine and Dani Olmo is excellent for us, helping us build confidence. This is something we are working on as a group,” the goalkeeper added.

He expressed full confidence in Spain's offensive power and his teammates.

“It’s true that when we have such clear control of the ball, we have many decisive players on the flanks. And it’s not just the forwards. Pedro Porro scored a goal purely on instinct, and Cucurella’s assists demonstrate his exceptionally high level of play,” the Spaniard concluded.
