Former NBA player JR Smith has been arrested in Texas on a charge of assault causing bodily injury in a domestic violence case.
Smith was taken into custody by the Royse City Police Department after authorities were alerted to an active warrant issued by police in Southlake.
According to Hunt County jail records, Smith remained in custody on Tuesday with bond yet to be set. Southlake police have not released further details, citing an ongoing investigation. Smith is expected to appear before a Tarrant County court.
Smith played in the NBA from 2004 to 2020, appearing in 977 games and winning two championships alongside LeBron James: with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. He was named the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year in 2013 and ended his professional career in 2020 with the Lakers.
This is not Smith's first legal trouble. In 2009, he served 24 days in jail after pleading guilty to reckless driving following a car crash in New Jersey that resulted in the death of Andre Bell.
