Although Oscar Piastri is no longer directly in contention for the world championship this season, the Australian driver is adamant that there is still plenty to fight for in the remaining rounds.

Among his primary priorities for the rest of the campaign are improving his form at circuits that have historically proven difficult for him and gaining a deeper understanding of the latest upgrade package on the MCL40. The goal is to ensure next season's challenger is far less twitchy and difficult to handle.

McLaren are introducing their final upgrades of the year in phases. During the United States Grand Prix weekend, the team fitted revised front suspension geometry and a modified rear diffuser, with further components expected soon. While these changes are aimed at unlocking more performance, the team is still evaluating their impact. The underlying characteristic of the MCL40 also remains—forcing drivers to push on every single lap as if it were a qualifying run.

"I definitely have to drive in quite a different way now compared to before," Piastri told the media ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix. "It is undoubtedly a massive challenge, but I believe we will find a solution. We need to do that over the next few months. Hopefully it won't take years, although there are fundamental aspects of these cars that simply cannot be changed. "The process is tough, but there are positive signs. Austin was definitely a small step backwards, but sometimes you have to take two steps forward and one step back to find the right direction and experiment. The three races before that showed very solid progress, but we still have plenty to build on. "We are expecting more new parts. Right now, both Lando Norris and I are grappling with a car that is extremely sensitive, and not just over track bumps. The driving style required is very specific, and the operating window is far too narrow. When external factors like bumps or strong winds come into play, the job becomes even trickier. The car is already faster than it was before Austin, but our rivals are also developing at a serious pace, so we know how much work lies ahead," the Australian added.
