The accident occurred as a result of brake failure which led to the vehicle ramming into a market that was along the road.

The accident makes it, at least, three of such to have claimed lives since the fuel scarcity that has rocked Nigeria for several weeks began. The scarcity saw the number of tankers travelling Nigerian roads, following the calling off of the strike that started the scarcity, increase.

An eye witness told journalists that the tanker was heading towards the Akure end of the road from the Ilesha end when the accident happened.
