Southampton Coach Leaving For Tottenham Hotspur
Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur are pursuing replacement of outgoing coach in the person of Mauricio Pochettino. The club is expected to appoint the Argentine as their new coach within the next 72 hours. Pochettino is currently not happy at Southampton as the club is looking very unstable for the coming season as a result of their inability to keep hold of their best players.
Luke Shaw and captain Adam Lallana who were the stars of the team last season are big transfer talks in the premiership, with confirmed interest from the likes of Man Utd and Chelsea and a host of other clubs.
A deal to bring the 42 year-old Santa Fe native coach to White Hart lane is nearing completion as sources closely following the deal have revealed that it is only formality he will be named as Sherwood's replacement within the week. Out-of-favour coach Tim Sherwood was sacked by the president of the club Daniel Levy at the end of the season in less than a year after the 45 year-old took over from Andres Villas Boas.
Sherwood may not be the only one leaving the club as reports also suggest that the club's technical director's position is threatened after a series of unsatisfactory results from the club's big spending in the transfer market last season.
It seemed at once Tottenham would go for Ajax manager Frank de Boer but they always had a monitoring eye on Pochettino and in the time expressed their interest to Southampton. Talks have progressed since then.
Pochettino was not convinced at Southampton's squad strength for the coming season fearing depletion, he rejected a new contract at the club.
The club management failed to persuade him assurances that they would keep their best to try to better their last season's record of 8th position, just two places behind Tottenham. The Argentine coach believes Saints cannot help him fulfill his ambition of a fourth place finish, citing Spurs as a better suited place to reach his aim.
Tottenham feel that Pochettino can help them reach their ultimate target for next season; qualification to the champions league and the appointment of the former Espanyol manager will not be a surprise, he had replaced Nigel Adkins at the helms at St. Mary's, leading them to the 14th position in his first Barclay's premiership season with victories over Chelsea, Liverpool and Champions Manchester City.
Tottenham will hope that the former Argentina international can reform the team into a more stable one after they fell short of expected results from the sale of former star player Gareth Bale and acquisition of players with a whopping £107m
