Tottenham CEO Backs Manager: Changes May Take Time to Pay Off

Tottenham Hotspur chief executive Vinai Venkatesham offered his full backing to manager Roberto De Zerbi at the club's inaugural fan advisory board meeting, following a difficult start to the campaign that has left Spurs bottom of the Premier League with just two points from five matches.

Venkatesham highlighted Tottenham's underlying performances, noting that Roberto De Zerbi's side have been creating plenty of opportunities without finding the back of the net. "I share the disappointment over our current points tally and completely understand the fans' frustration. However, I've been encouraged by several aspects of our performances since the opening-day defeat," Venkatesham said at the meeting.

The North London club underwent a major squad overhaul during the summer window, bringing in ten new recruits, including Slovak international goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka. The influx of new talent was balanced by the departures of established figures such as Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, and Kevin Danso.

"The club underwent significant changes both on and off the pitch over the summer. It can take time for these adjustments to truly bed in. I have complete faith in De Zerbi, the new signings, and the steps we've put in place. Behind the scenes, we're constantly working to improve our results," the chief executive added.

Following back-to-back 17th-place finishes, Venkatesham looked to reshape the club's transfer approach. Spurs spent heavily to bring in Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, and Savinho, while balancing the books with pre-agreed sales for Danso and Radu Drăgușin.

"Financial regulations have been a genuine constraint. The club hasn't posted a profit since 2019, with outgoings steadily rising due to wage inflation and transfer fees. In modern football, generating revenue from player sales is essential to staying compliant with financial rules," Venkatesham explained, as quoted by news agency DPA.
