Tottenham capitalise on early Mateta red card to keep Crystal Palace in relegation zone
Tottenham secured a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace in a London derby in matchday nine of the Premier League. The decisive moment came early on with the dismissal of Jean-Philippe Mateta, who was shown a red card after just 13 minutes. Spurs wasted no time taking advantage, breaking the deadlock through Archie Gray (25') before Jan Paul van Hecke (73') sealed the three points for the hosts.
The tone was largely set in the 12th minute when Jean-Philippe Mateta made a reckless challenge on Micky van de Ven, catching his Achilles tendon with studs up. Referee Michael Oliver initially allowed play to continue, but after reviewing the pitchside monitor, he sent the Frenchman off. Roberto De Zerbi's men capitalized on their numerical advantage, seizing control of the contest and going ahead in the 24th minute. Mohammed Kudus delivered an excellent corner, and Archie Gray found space in the box to head past Dean Henderson. Tottenham kept pushing before the break but could not add to their lead.
Spurs increased the pressure after the restart, creating a flurry of chances, though Henderson produced several decisive stops to keep Palace in contention. In the 73rd minute, however, Jan Paul van Hecke put the game beyond the visitors' reach. Following a cross into the penalty area, the defender's initial header struck the crossbar, but he was first to react to tuck away the rebound.
The result marks Tottenham's third consecutive Premier League victory under Roberto De Zerbi, lifting them to eighth in the table. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace's struggles deepen as they remain stuck in the relegation zone.
