Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff has issued a stern warning to his drivers, stating he will remove one of them if an intense rivalry develops. The team has a history of such internal conflicts, but Wolff is adamant that tensions will not escalate as they have in the past.
The Brackley-based squad has enjoyed a successful first half of the 2026 season under the new technical regulations, securing eight wins from eleven races and three out of four sprint events. The campaign has been particularly strong for Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who holds a comfortable lead in the Drivers' Championship with six victories to his name.
George Russell entered the season as a title favorite, given his greater experience compared to Antonelli, but the Briton has struggled to match the young Italian's pace. After the first 11 rounds, Russell trails his teammate by 59 points in the overall standings.
While there hasn't been any public rivalry between the two yet, internal tension is something Mercedes has experienced before, notably when Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg battled for the title from 2014 to 2016. Their conflict was widely publicized, and various on-track incidents only heightened the team's unease.
When asked in an exclusive interview with racingnews365.com if he foresees a repeat of the Hamilton vs. Rosberg years with his current driver lineup, Wolff responded: “I won’t allow it. That will never happen to me again. That will never happen to the team again. It’s simple. I’ll just take the driver out if it does.”
