Torreense in the Elite: Europe Painted Claret and Blue for Another Golden Story
Make way for Torreense! The club from the West of Portugal is packing its bags, ready to paint Europe claret and blue.
Founded on May 1, 1917, Torreense is fast approaching its 110th anniversary. Its journey has seen its share of ups and downs, a common thread for all clubs regardless of their competitive reality. However, understanding the city's origins reveals an extraordinarily solid foundation for the institution to project itself and rebound when necessary: the Lines of Torres Vedras.
It was upon this defensive shield, established in 1809, that the city developed an effective defense system to combat Napoleon's troops during the French invasions. Good triumphed, and the subsequent years brought sustained growth that propelled the city (which gained city status in 1979) to national excellence.
On the pitch, Torreense has always fought with all its might to overcome various obstacles and envision a future written in bold success. In addition to the national championship title in the (former) II Division in the 1954/1955 season, they recently clinched the Liga 3 title in the 2021/2022 season, securing promotion to the second tier of Portuguese football, where they currently remain.
But the ultimate trophy was reserved for May 24, 2026. A date that will forever be etched in the memory of all those who hold Torreense dear. On that day, at the Estádio Nacional in Jamor, the team led by Luís Tralhão defeated Sporting (2-1 after extra time) to win the Taça de Portugal for the first time in its nearly 110-year history.
The celebration was intense, lasting well into the night, an authentic early carnival in Torres Vedras.
And it was precisely due to this victory in the premier cup competition that Torreense earned the right to participate in this season's UEFA Europa League group stage.
Lillestrom (away), Sunderland (home), Ferencvaros (away), Ararat (home), Celtic (home), Real Sociedad (away), Lech Poznan (away), and Olympiakos (home). These are the opponents awaiting them in the competition.
One thing is certain: Europe will be painted claret and blue.
"We have ambition, but we know there are huge differences"
Perhaps not even the most ardent Torreense supporter would dare to demand anything from the club in the upcoming UEFA Europa League group stage.
The club from the West will face teams of a different caliber, and as such, the only expectation for the claret and blue is likely to represent Portuguese football with dignity.
This is precisely the view of André Sabino. The general director of Torreense SAD acknowledges that internally there's a clear understanding of the gap between them and their competitors, but he makes it clear that the team will do everything possible to minimize these differences. "Experts are suggesting that Torreense might not earn any points, citing the disparity between the competing teams. Therefore, anything we achieve beyond that is a bonus. Naturally, we have our ambitions; we always want to be very competitive and leave a great impression of Sport Clube União Torreense and our project. However, we are also perfectly aware that there are indeed very significant differences at all levels, and we will try to mitigate them as much as possible," he stated in exclusive comments to A BOLA.
On the occasion, the director shared a recent anecdote that speaks volumes about the economic context concerning certain clubs participating in the European competition. "I can confide that the UEFA general secretary was surprised to learn that the value for participating in this group stage is half the budget of some Liga 2 teams," he noted.
"It's a source of immense pride"
Torreense moves a city, a municipality, and an entire region. And if the connection between members and fans to the club is already strong, it becomes even more so during these days. Just like an anonymous supporter, the Mayor of Torres Vedras is also eagerly anticipating the upcoming Europa League. "Torreense's debut in European competitions is a historic moment for the club, for Torres Vedras, and for the entire West region. To see the name of Sport Clube União Torreense reach a European competition is a source of immense pride and represents the recognition of a journey built with ambition, hard work, and dedication. It also demonstrates that, from a territory like ours, it is possible to dream, grow, and compete beyond borders," affirmed Sérgio Galvão in exclusive comments to A BOLA.
"It will be a special moment for the people of Torres Vedras and for all those who follow and live sports in our region. Regardless of the results this European adventure may bring, this first participation has already secured a place in the history of the club and our municipality. I wish the team, the staff, and the fans an excellent European campaign, and above all, that they enjoy and make us enjoy this unique moment. Go, Torreense," concluded the mayor of Torres Vedras.
