Pramac Yamaha have announced that Toprak Razgatlioglu will miss the remainder of the MotoGP season as he is set to undergo surgery on the right shoulder he injured during the Indonesian Grand Prix weekend.
The Turkish rider suffered a heavy crash during Saturday's Free Practice 2 at Mandalika, dislocating his shoulder. Although he lined up on the grid, physical discomfort forced him to retire from the race after just eight laps.
Subsequent medical evaluations confirmed that the injury is more severe than initially thought and requires surgery in the coming days. As a result, 'El Turco' will be sidelined for the final five rounds of his debut MotoGP campaign.
"I am extremely disappointed to miss the Australian Grand Prix. Phillip Island is one of my favorite circuits and a place tied to some of the most special moments of my Superbike career. I was really looking forward to racing here on a MotoGP bike, which makes this situation even harder to take. Following further medical checks after the crash at Mandalika, it became clear that my shoulder injury was more serious than we initially believed. As a result, I will undergo surgery in the coming days to give myself the best possible chance of making a full recovery and returning to peak physical condition. It wasn't an easy decision, but after consulting with doctors and my closest circle, we are confident it is the right move for my future. I'd also like to wish Jack (Miller) the best of luck at his home race. Competing in front of your home fans is always special, and since this will be the final MotoGP round at Phillip Island, I hope he enjoys a fantastic weekend and gets a great result. I'll be cheering for him and the whole team from afar," Razgatlioglu said.
Pramac Yamaha have yet to confirm whether they will field a substitute rider this weekend or run a single bike at Phillip Island. If a replacement is called up, it will almost certainly be Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez, who has already made four wildcard appearances this season.
