Belgium captain Youri Tielemans was sidelined for the quarter-final clash against Spain in the 2026 World Cup, which Belgium lost 2-1. The midfielder was forced to cut short his warm-up due to an adductor injury, with Hans Vanaken stepping in to replace him in the starting lineup.

“When your body tells you to stop, you shouldn't push it,” Tielemans stated.

“By the end of the match, it was clear many players were fatigued. We lacked freshness in the crucial moments, and it cost us dearly. It’s a real shame, but hats off to all the players because they gave absolutely everything. I’m proud. And I hope the fans back home are proud too,” the midfielder added.

During the match itself, Thibaut Courtois also sustained an injury. His replacement, Senne Lammens, made a critical error that led to the Red Devils conceding their second goal.
