NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated that the league is seriously considering expansion, but emphasized that a final decision has not yet been made and there's a real possibility it might not occur at all.

During a Board of Governors meeting, the NBA confirmed it is "exploring expansion," with numerous open questions ranging from ownership selection and financial terms to the availability of players to fill new teams.

"There's a real chance that expansion might not happen. We might add one team, two, or none at all," said Adam Silver.

The league is currently collaborating with investment bank PJT Partners to assess potential ownership structures, markets, and infrastructure requirements, aiming for a clearer picture by the end of 2026.

Seattle and Las Vegas are emerging as prime candidates for new franchises, markets the NBA views as ready and financially attractive.

One of the key questions is the league's quality should expansion occur.

"I am confident we have enough talent for 32 competitive teams," the commissioner stated.

Silver also addressed other significant issues discussed at the meeting. Regarding the rule requiring a minimum of 65 games played for individual awards, he commented:

"The rule is working. I'm not prepared to say that, due to a sense of injustice in individual cases, it isn't yielding results."

He particularly emphasized the need to resolve the issue of "tanking," or intentionally losing games to secure a better draft position.

"Entering next season, the incentives will be completely different than they are now. We will solve this problem. Period," Silver concluded.
