Argentina had previously defeated Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup round of 16. Following the match, the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) called on FIFA officials to exclude the entire French officiating team from further participation in the tournament, expressing dissatisfaction with referee Francois Letexier's decisions. After the incident, several journalists accredited through the AFA received an email sent from an account identified as AFA Medios.

The text, attributed to a group of Egyptian hackers, questioned the officiating, stating: "The theft will not go unnoticed. If there is no justice on the field, do not expect peace on social media."

The AFA confirmed that several messages were sent from its account and clarified that the organization neither created nor approved them. It stated that it is investigating unauthorized access to its systems and asked journalists to ignore any suspicious emails. They are currently analyzing the extent of the incident.
