Reports say Colbert crushed it with an average of 6.6 million viewers on the show's premiere on Tuesday, September 8. In fact, he doubled the Late Show audience from a year ago, the Neilsen ratings company reports.

With his first guests, Jeb Bush and George Clooney, 'The Late Show' beat did not only beat NBC's Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, which drew slightly less than 3 million viewers, but also crushed ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live, by 1.75 million viewers.

CBS' rising tide also lifted The Late Show With  to a victory over its NBC rival, Late Night With Seth Meyers. Corden delivered 1.85 million viewers to Meyers' 1.3 million.

Colbert's highly publicized debut followed his exit last December as host of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report.
