Khamzat Chimaev is a massive favorite against Sean Strickland. The two middleweight fighters are set to clash in a championship bout this weekend — Saturday, May 9, 2026 — at UFC 328, in a fight fueled by animosity and shared training experiences.
According to former UFC fighter and current analyst Chael Sonnen, the stakes are higher than just titles and bruised egos. In Sonnen's words, Strickland represents the last hope for the UFC and America against the Chimaev era and an overall Russian invasion.
“Strickland is the last hope,” Sonnen told Ariel Helwani. “He is the last line of defense between the fighting community and having to watch Chimaev for the foreseeable future. I remember warning the UFC… I warned them about the Russian invasion. It’s coming. The Russians are coming… Unless you want a whole bunch of guys with beards and no mustaches to come in and take all your belts, the only way to stop them is not to give them the opportunity.
As a wrestler, I can tell you that culture is on a different level of toughness, and Strickland truly is our last line of defense. If Chimaev breaks Sean Strickland, you better get used to the Chimaev era, because it’s not going away anytime soon.”
Indeed, there has been a recent shift and pullback from signing Russian talent, as many of the top prospects from that part of the world are now joining the PFL roster. Unless an emerging Russian fighter is a teammate of Chimaev or Islam Makhachev, they often face a much tougher path to the UFC roster compared to any American fighter with a 6-0 record who gets a shot on Contender Series.
As for the Chimaev era, it might end sooner than expected, regardless of the outcome at UFC 328. “Borz” has clearly stated he doesn't intend to stay at middleweight even to face a worthy contender like Nassourdine Imavov. He would rather jump to 205 pounds in pursuit of a second title and a second Chimaev era… though his ambitions could tragically backfire.
