Sučić: All Referee Decisions Went Against Us, Ronaldo Consoled Me After the Match
Croatia midfielder Petar Sučić voiced his frustration with the officiating in their 2-1 loss to Portugal in the World Cup Round of 16.
“I feel devastated. But I'm proud of our team, especially the way we played in the second half. We deserved more, at least extra time. We played really well and created many chances,” Sučić stated.
“They disallowed three of our goals. I'd like someone to explain some of the referee's decisions to me. There were too many controversial moments that went against us. Ultimately, we have to congratulate Portugal on advancing,” he added.
The Croatian midfielder also shared details of his encounter with Cristiano Ronaldo after the final whistle: “When Cristiano Ronaldo came up to me, I was a bit shocked. He said that's football, and all sorts of things happen in it. He praised me and told me to keep going, and that everything would work out in the future.”
Sučić also commented on the disallowed goal late in the match: “The referee said Matanović touched the ball, which the chip inside it indicated. I don't know what to say. In my opinion, he didn't touch it, and the goal was legitimate. Maybe I should have looked more closely. I also believe my goal should have been analyzed better to determine if there was an offside.”
Regarding Luka Modrić's future with the national team, Sučić said: “We haven't discussed Luka Modrić's future with the team. He is a leader, a captain, the best player – whatever he decides, we will respect it.”
