Steph Curry's Incredible Confession: "I Couldn't See the Whole Time!" Best Shooter in History Reveals Rare, Incurable Eye Condition
What makes this feat even more impressive is Curry's recent admission that, at the time, he was suffering from a rare eye condition that caused blurry vision and distorted images. Just imagine: all those times Steph Curry hit incredible shots from nearly half-court, and the man could barely see anything clearly?!
Curry Was Constantly Squinting
In an interview with "People" magazine, the two-time NBA MVP recounted that it all happened back in 2018, when then-Warriors general manager Bob Myers asked him why he was squinting so much – something that was even visible on TV broadcasts.
- He texted me after a game because, obviously, they kept showing me on the bench during the broadcast. He wrote: “You’re just squinting, you look like you can’t see anything. Have you had your eyes checked? You should do that, because that’s not normal,” Curry recalled.
Although he went to the optometrist convinced they wouldn't find anything, the result completely surprised him.
- They told me I have a rare condition called keratoconus – an irregular shape of the cornea that apparently leads to blurry and distorted vision. What I learned about it is that it's a progressive condition that can worsen vision over time and is irreversible if it goes in the wrong direction, Curry explained.
He Had to Focus More
Steph added that this condition practically forced him to process much more information in real-time, given that he didn't have natural sharp vision. In his characteristic style, Curry joked about his diagnosis, suggesting what he would name his memoirs if he ever wrote them.
- I joke that my memoirs, when I finish my career, should be called “I Couldn’t See the Whole Time,” Curry said with a laugh.
Before basketball fans and Warriors supporters panic that the superstar will go blind, Curry reassured everyone by saying he goes for check-ups every six months and has the support of a professional team that has alleviated any anxiety he felt when he learned of the diagnosis. He also revealed that he has become a true expert at wearing contact lenses – something he couldn't have imagined at the start of his career.
- For those first year or two, I was stubborn, because part of my job was to see the rim and the court, even if everything was blurry. I thought, “I’m used to this.” But, as for the lenses, it was about finding the right ones and the right prescription – ones that stay stable while I play, Curry concluded.
It's truly astonishing how much Curry achieved before he even had his eyes checked: three NBA titles, two MVP awards, and numerous All-Star and All-NBA selections. We can only imagine how much better he would have been if he had gone for an examination sooner.
